The Nigerian movie industry, popularly known as Nollywood is highly diversified in languages. This is as a result of the different languages and ethnic groups we have in Nigeria. Unlike other movie industries, the Nigeria movie industry has different sectors.
The Yoruba movie industry has improved a lot compared to its early days and the Yoruba movie stars are now well-known. They can now stand side by side with their English counterparts who have, for long dominated the scene.
Not so long ago, many of the Yoruba actors could hardly sustain themselves and their families. In fact, most of them came out to the public to express their feelings. 1. Odunlade Adekola
Odunlade Adekola is the most popular and richest Yoruba actor. His acting career began in Abeokuta, Ogun state but the past ten years have been his best. He has featured in 100 movies and most times, he is the lead actor within that period and has also starred in English movies. He is the CEO of Odunlade Adekola films productions and he helps in training upcoming actors. Some of his popular movies include; Taxi driver (oko ashewo), wives on strikes, new money and Lagos real fake lives. Odunlade has a lot of endorsements under his sleeves in addition to his income from acting.
2. Funke Akindele
Funke Akindele became one of the best-known actors, thanks to Jenifer`s diary. She clinched an award for role in the TV series. She is the only Nigerian actress that has won the prestigious AMAA best actress in the leading role. Her acting career kicked off by playing the role of Bisi in the TV series “I need to know”. She has over a hundred movies to her credit.
3. Dayo Amusa
She is a singer, actress, producer, and a successful businesswoman. She grew up in Surulere with her father, Kolawole Amusa. Her acting career began in 2002 and she has not backed down since then. One of her popular movies is “Unforgivable” which was directed by Desmond Elliot. She won the award for the best indigenous actress at the Nollywood movies awards and best crossover act, in 2014.
4. Mercy Aigbe
She made her début in the Yoruba movie industry acting along with Yinka Quadri in 2002, many of her fans know her as “Osas”. One of her most popular movies is “Ara” which was produced by Wemimo film. She won the award for the best Yoruba actress by the city people awards in 2009. She also won the Afro Hollywood award, UK, in 2012.
5. Femi Adebayo
Femi Adebayo is a lawyer, an actor, a movie director, and a producer. He is the son of Adebayo Salami, one of the pioneers of Yoruba movies. It is also interesting to know that he was the former special adviser to the Kwara state Governor on Arts, Culture and Tourism. He started his career in 1998 and have featured in a host of movies, one of the most popular being “Apaadi”.
