The Nigerian movie industry, popularly known as Nollywood is probably the best movie industry in Africa and one of the best in the world. The United Nations named it the second most productive film industry in the world.
Its actors have given their best, to propel the industry into an international brand. But unfortunately, some of its stars never lived to see the height of their achievements. As a spinoff from the last post about Nigerian musicians who died at the peak of their careers, this is a list of some of the Nigerian actors who died at the peak of their careers.
Sam Loco Efeeimwonkiyeke
The comedy legend is one of the most talented Nollywood actors to bless the screen. He distinguished himself as a rare talent in the Nigerian movie industry and acted in over 200 movies. The cause of his death is unclear, but most people believe that he died as a result of an asthma attack. It was also reported that he passed away during the editing of a soon to be released movie.
The father of famous musician Dr. Sid was born on the 20th of November 1942. He was an award-winning Nigerian actor and considered to be one of the pillars of the Nigeria movie industry. Justus Esiri began his acting career way back in the ‘60s. He became popular for his role in the tv series “The village headmaster”. He passed away on the 19th of February 2013.
Henrietta Kosoko was the wife of Nollywood actor, Jide Kosoko. She died at the age of 53 at a hospital. One of her famous movies was “Omolade”, which was produced by her husband.
She was a famous Nollywood veteran who grew up in Nigeria but spent her university days in England. The first movie she featured in was titled “village headmaster” in 1970. She went on to secure a role in another movie titled “checkmate”, a popular Nigerian tv series which aired in the late ’80s to early ’90s. Bukky Ajayi passed away on the 6th of July 2016 as a result of heart-related problems. She was honored with the industry merit award few months before she passed away.
Festus Aguebor was one of the famous Nigerian actors who was adored by fans. His famous movies are “Igodo” and “Family contract”. He passed away on the 23rd of February 2017 at the age of 70.
Moji Olaiya became famous for her role in Wale Adenuga super story production, “no pain no gain”, she played Ireti in that movie and the name stuck. Her sudden death came after she welcomed her second daughter. She was born on the 27th of February 1975 and passed away on the 17th of March 2017. She was also famous for her roles in movies like “Sade Blade”, “Agunbaniro”, “Omo Iya”, “Meta Leyi”.
The popular actress and producer died on the 15th of may 2018 after battling breast cancer. She was buried on the 17th of May 2018 in according to the Islamic tenets. The movie “Omoge Campus” brought her into the spotlight as she played the role of Bola Igida. She also starred in the Wale Adenuga series “Papa Ajasco” and “No pain no gain”.
The most recent and one of the most shocking of all, Tosyn Bucknor an all-round creative adored by all. Oluwatosin Bucknor popularly known as Tosyn Bucknor was born on August 15th, 1981 and was an actress, social media content creator, and a Nigerian media personality. She was found dead by her husband on Monday night. According to her sister, Funke Bucknor, she died due to complications from sickle cell anemia. She starred in the 2014 movie “Dazzling Gaze” and the country is still mourning her passing away.
