There is no doubt that Chiwetel Ejiofor is one of the top actors in Hollywood. Nigerian born English actor has acted in different top Hollywood movies. His acting career is filled with many awards, nominations and endorsement deals. He featured in a movie titled “Half of a Yellow Sun”. The movie portrayed some of the happenings in the Biafran War.

Biography

Chiwetel Umeadi Ejiofor was born by a Nigerian family on the 10th of July 1977 in Forest Gate, London, England. His father was a doctor while his mother was a pharmacist. The family got involved in a car accident during a trip to Nigeria in 1988. His father died as a result of a head injury while 11-year-old Chiwetel survived with multiple injuries. Some of his injuries are still visible today. He later returned to the UK where he began his junior school at Dulwich College Preparatory School. During his days at the school, he started performing in many school plays. He continued with this even after moving to the senior Dulwich College. Chiwetel got encouraged for his progress in acting and he decided to join the National Youth Theatre at the age of 18.

Afterward, he was admitted into the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). This was a big deal because the school was the oldest and one of the best in the UK. He played different roles in many movies during his first year at the academy. His big break came in 1997 where he was cast by Steven Spielberg in the movie Amistad. He left LAMDA a year later to pursue his career in film acting

Movies

After featuring in Amistad, he went on to appear in “G: MT – Greenwich Mean Time (1999)”. Then, he featured in “it was an Accident (2000)” before later appearing in “Tom Hooper’s Red Dust” in 2004. Some of his  movies include Deadly Voyage (1996), Dirty Pretty Things , She Hate Me, Woody Allen’s Melinda and Melinda (2004), Four Brothers (2005), Inside Man (2006), American Gangster (2007), 12 years a slave, Triple 9, Doctor Strange, Salt, Mary Magdalene, Half of a Yellow Sun ,The Martian, and many others.

Awards

His acting career has been a successful one and he has different awards and nomination to show for it. To begin with, he received a Laurence Olivier Award nomination and then won the Best Actor award at the British Independent Film Awards in 2002. Later on, he got nominated for the Rising Star Award at the British Academy Film Awards. Afterward, he received two Golden Globe Award nominations for his performances in Kinky Boots (2007) and Tsunami: The Aftermath (2007). He was awarded the Laurence Olivier Award for his performance in Othello. In addition, he was appointed as an officer of the Order of the British Empire by the Queen of England. Furthermore, he received an Academy and Golden Globe Award-nomination in 2013.
