Once the Vice President of the country, Atiku Abubakar was born on the 25th of November 1946 in Jada, Adamawa state. His father Garba Abubakar was a trader from the Fulani tribe while his mother is Aisha Kande. Alhaji Atiku Abubakar had a late start to his education. He gained admission into Adamawa provincial secondary school in 1960 and graduated in 1965. Afterward, he enrolled into Police College in Kaduna then proceeded to the ministry of finance to work as a tax officer. After a while, he left for the School of Hygiene in Kano state and finished in 1967. Atiku Abubakar gained admission into Ahmadu Bello University the same year to study law on scholarship. He graduated in 1969 and was employed at the Nigeria Customs Service. He later retired in 1989 to begin his political journey and business career.

Abubakar Atiku began his political journey when he took part in the gubernatorial campaign of Bamanga Tukur. He later met Shehu Musa Yar’adua and became the national vice chairman of the people’s front of Nigeria. Afterward, he represented his constituency at the constituent assembly which was organized to decide a new constitution for Nigeria. Then, he ran for the gubernatorial seat of Adamawa state and won the primaries. Unfortunately, he was disqualified from running for the election. He contested for the Presidency in 1992 as the candidate of the Social Democratic Party but came third in the primaries. Some people might call it a quit after all these defeats but Atiku wouldn’t. Fast forwarded into 1998, he ran for the gubernatorial seat of Adamawa state under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He won and was picked as the running mate of Olusegun Obasanjo in the 1999 elections which they won. They secured their second term after winning the 2002 general elections. After their last year in office, Atiku left PDP for AC to run for the seat of presidency in the 2007 general elections. He was not allowed to participate in the election by INEC due to corruption allegations. However, The supreme court overruled the decision and he was allowed to participate but he lost. Later on, he returned the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2007, left again in 2014 and then came back to contest against Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 elections.

Atiku married four wives Amina Abubakar, Ladi, Princess Rukayatu and Fatima Abubakar. However, he divorced Ladi and later got married to Jennifer Iwenjora. He has twenty-six children.
