Aliko Dangote was born on April 10, 1957, into a wealthy Muslim family in Kano state. His mother Mariyo Aliko gave birth to four children with Dangote being the fourth. He has two elder brothers, Sani and Bello Dangote, his only junior brother died in an air crash with Ibrahim Abacha in 1996. Aliko Dangote was raised by his maternal great-grandfather, Alhassan Abdullahi Dantata. Alhaji Dantata is one of the wealthiest people in Kano who made his wealth from selling rice and oats. Dantata became Dangote`s guardian after the death of his (Dangote) father in 1965.
Dangote became highly interested in business as a result of staying with Dantata. At the age of 21 years, he borrowed 3000 thousand dollars from his uncle to start his own business. He started selling agricultural produce and after some time he paid back his late uncle Alhaji Sanusi Dantata. Aliko Dangote obtained a degree in business studies from Al-Azahar University, Cairo, Egypt. According to him, he used to buy cartons of sweets and sell it to his fellow students to make profits.
Dangote moved to Lagos in 1977 to start a cement business where he discovered that acting as a middleman was too expensive. He decided to build a plant where he started producing most of the things he was importing. His business has continued to grow since then. He is now into oil and gas, manufacturing and consumer goods, telecommunication, and real estate. He recently finished building probably the biggest refinery in Nigeria. Dangote is currently married to the daughter of the late president, Musa Yar`Adua after going through three divorces.
Aliko Dangote has a net worth of 14 billion dollars according to Forbes 2018. His garage is filled with different exotic cars. He owns a massive yacht which he bought in 2013 and named after his mother, Mariyo Aliko. He has his own private jet which is estimated to be worth around 45 million dollars.
