The first state university in Nigeria was established way back in 1981. One of its major purposes was to provide admission opportunities for the large population of Nigeria secondary school graduates. Since then, a lot of these universities have been established unlike private universities, these universities are controlled by government at the state level. Also, each of these universities is spread across the 36 states of the country. Furthermore, most of these universities are regarded as second generation universities because they were created after the first set of federal universities. There are 38 state universities in Nigeria but we are going to be looking at the 10 oldest of them all.

Rivers State University of Science and Technology (1980)

Rivers State University was founded in 1980 and it is one of the best states University in Nigeria. The University has a population of 17,000 students and 3,000 Staff strength. Also, the university can be regarded as the first Technological University in the country. Rivers state university has a total of 7 faculties.

Enugu State University (1980)

Enugu State University was founded in the year 1980 as Anambra State University of Science and Technology. It was later transformed when Enugu state was created. The University can boast of 50,000 students. The University Faculties include Engineering, Law, Agriculture and Natural Resources Management, Applied Natural Sciences, Education, Social Sciences, Pharmacy.

Imo State University (1981)

Known as one of the best State Universities in the country, Imo State University was established in 1981. The University has different faculties which are namely; Agriculture, Law, Engineering. Social Sciences, Education.

AMBROSE ALI UNIVERSITY (1981)

Ambrose Ali University is Located in Edo state. Established in the year 1981, this University started off as Bendel State University before it was later changed to Ambrose Ali University. The institution used to honor Professor Ambrose. The University has a total of 8 colleges; Legal studies and Medical science, Agriculture and Natural resources, Engineering and Technology, Arts and social science, Natural science, Education.

ADEKUNLE AJASIN UNIVERSITY (1982)

Formerly known as Ondo state university, Adekunle Ajasin University is named after Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin. The school offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Also, the school has a total of 6 faculties.

EKITI STATE UNIVERSITY (1982)

The institution was established as Obafemi Awolowo University on March 30, 1982, by late Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin. Popularly called EKSU, the school is led by Professor Samuel Oye and Chairman in the name of Oladele Julis Adesina.

LAGOS STATE UNIVERSITY (1983)

Probably the second most famous school in Lagos, The Lagos State University (LASU) was established in 1983. The school has gone on to surpass some Federal Universities in terms of facilities and population. In fact, the school has a population of 61,000. Also, the school operates a multi-campus system with 4 campuses which are located in Ojo (main campus), Ikeja, Surulere, Epe.

LADOKE AKINTOLA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY (1990)

The University was established in 1990 and it is among the best state University in the country. LAUTECH this is a state-owned university located in Ogbomosho, Oyo State. Also, the school has a student population of 25,000 and staff strength of 3,000 staffs.

BENUE STATE UNIVERSITY (1992)

This University was established in the year 1992, the population of the students as of 2015 was 32,000. The University has the following colleges Science, Law, Education, Art, Health Science, Environmental Science, and Management Science.

DELTA STATE UNIVERSITY (1992)

Delta State University was established in 1992, by the Delta State Government. Similar to LASU, the University runs a multiple campus system with 3 campuses under its use. Also, the University has a student capacity of 36,000 with 11 faculties namely.
