For the most part, the strike has been on for almost two months and I hope it doesn’t go further. Therefore, private universities are regarded as the best for student majorly because they are highly immune to strikes. Without wasting much of our time, here is a list of 10 oldest private universities in Nigeria.
1. Babcock University (1959)
Babcock University is a Christian owned private university set up in 1959. It is being operated by the Seventh-day Adventist church and it is at Ilishan Remo, between Ibadan and Lagos. Lastly, the school has a student population of 20,000.
2. Igbenedion University (1999)
Established in 1999, the school was founded by Sir Gabriel Osawaru Igbenedion. He is a philanthropist, a billionaire, and a well-known individual in Benin state. The university offers both graduate and undergraduate programs. Also, the school has a total of seven colleges and over 5000 students across the colleges.
3. Madonna University (1999)
Located in Okija, Anambra state, Madonna University was founded on the 10th of May 1999 by Father Edeh. Madonna University has two branch campuses located in Elele and Akpugo respectively. The motto of the school is “Decency in Education and Morals” which is what you will expect from a Christian owned institution.

Bowen University is a private university established in 2001 and owned by the Nigerian Baptist Convention. It is located in Iwo, Osun state. The school only had 500 students during its opening in 2002. However, that has increased to about 2000 in 2017.
5. Pan Atlantic University (2002)
Located In the most populous state in the country, Pan Atlantic University was established in 2002. The school had its origin from the Lagos business school which was established in 1991. The University is officially accredited by the national universities commission.
6. Covenant University (2002)
This is institution is also part of the list of an ever growing Christian owned universities. Located in Ota, Ogun state, and established in 2002, the school is affiliated with Living Faith Church Worldwide. Also, it is a member of Commonwealth Universities, Association of African Universities and National Universities Commission.
7. Benson Idahosa University (2002)
Benson Idahosa University was established in 2002 and it is located in Benin City. It is being regarded as a competition to Igbenedion University. Also, the school is affiliated to the Church of God Mission International (CGMI).
8. American University of Nigeria (2004)
The American University of Nigeria is located in the northeastern part of the country. The school is one of the best private universities in Nigeria simply because of its adopted American style of higher education. Furthermore, the school offers graduate, undergraduate and professional level programs.
9. Ajayi Crowther University (2005)
Ajayi Crowther University is currently ranked as 66 in the country and 9019 in the world. It was established in 2005 by the Diocesan Board of the Church of Nigeria and it is located in Oyo town in a suburban setting.
10. Al Hikma University (2005)
To begin with, this is the oldest private Islamic university in Nigeria and it is located in Ilorin, Kwara state. It was founded by Abdul Raheem Oladimeji Islamic Foundation based in Nigeria, and the World Assembly of Muslim Youths based in Jeddah. In brief, the university currently has five colleges under its name with a view of expanding in the nearest future.
